This Month: Flat Rate Dorm Monitoring Plan and new Virtual Device Feature

Now Get a Low Flat Rate for Dorm Electricity Usage Dashboards

Here at DECK Monitoring we are finding more and more schools that are seeking Energy Dashboard solutions. While a comprehensive energy monitoring package can include a wide range of features, we find that one of the most frequently requested features is dorm vs. dorm competitions to reduce electricity usage. We are now offering a clear and simple pricing plan to provide this dorm competition feature: you can get all the necessary hardware, plus 5 years of access to our monitoring software, for the low flat rate of $2,500 per dorm. Leave those fancy college calculators in your pockets… it’s just that simple!

Dorm vs. dorm competitions offer real opportunities for significant energy cost savings. Energy Dashboards provide the crucial tool that makes these competitions work so well. Our Dashboards provide access to real-time electricity usage data, so students can directly observe the effects of conservation practices such as turning off lights and appliances when not in use. Our Dashboards also allow students to quickly compare their hall’s monthly progress against all other monitored halls.

The DECK Dashboard is a web-based display that shows energy consumption data through intuitive and interactive graphic features such as gauges, graphs, and equivalency values (such as dollar value). You can display your dormitory dashboards with kiosk-style monitors in each hall lobby. Students and faculty can also access current usage data from any computer or web-enabled device.

We understand that each dormitory has a unique energy usage profile based on factors such as occupancy and building age. In order to provide a meaningful comparison among different buildings, the DECK software solution uses a benchmark system as the basis for our competition feature. Your system administrator will be able to upload historical energy usage data for each hall into your DECK application interface (this data can be collected from electric bills). That data will automatically populate to your Dashboard, where it will appear as a benchmark usage level. Dormitories will be able to directly compare current consumption against their own benchmark usage levels. Whichever dorm achieves the greatest usage reduction against their own baseline is the winner! Many of our clients reward winning halls with monthly pizza parties and other incentives.

DECK Monitoring is always looking for new ways to provide helpful energy management tools at industry-leading price points. If your institution has any special needs or requests for energy monitoring, please contact our team to share your feedback. We are constantly innovating our monitoring products and services as we try to provide more value to our customers.

Now it's Easier than Ever to Enter Your Own Performance Baseline Data

Here is another installment in our ongoing series “You Asked for It!”

Some of our customers have been requesting a way to see their own data in the DECK software interface. We have listened, and the result is our new Virtual Device feature.

The Virtual Device feature lets you input data sets into your DECK interface so the data can be viewed and manipulated with the analytic tools in your DECK software. Virtual Device data can be graphed alongside actual reporting data, allowing you to easily identify periodic anomalies and outlier data points.

Here are some of the things you can do with the Virtual Device feature:

  • Compare your modeled baseline performance projections against actual usage data
  • See reported consumption alongside unmonitored data points, such as seasonal occupancy in a dormitory or hours of usage in a theatre or gymnasium
  • Download sets of historical usage data from your DECK system, modify that data with Excel macros or other programs, then re-load the modified data for comparison against reporting data
  • Upload historical system data from before DECK monitoring was activated at the project site

Uploading a data set to our Virtual Device feature is easy. First, access your DECK Admin Panel and navigate to the Overview page for the desired system. Look for the “upload data to create a virtual device” link just above the Device Reporting Hierarchy feature.

You will then access an upload interface where you will name your Virtual Device data set, identify the type of data, and answer a few questions to determine how our software will process the data. You will have the option to repeat your data on a daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly basis.

To upload data with our Virtual Device feature, you must format your data as a .csv file (this is a “Save as” option in Excel and most other spreadsheet programs). You will need to format your .csv file with two columns: the first column is for the time, the second column is for the numeric data points (each data point must be paired with a time value). Complete data formatting protocol can be read here:
